What does "1" mean?
I seen over my playing time of Guild Wars, when if your ready, everyone puts up a "1". I've just followed the trend and just put a 1 when I'm ready.
I was just kind of curious, is from Age of Empires(a popular RTS game)? I know when you type "1" a midi sound plays and says "yes" and when you type 2 then it says "no" and there a bunch of different saying for each number. Just curious. |

Originally it was "type your number if you are ready (party list number)" but everyone just does "1" for "ready".

I have always thought it was coming as a habit from 80s and 90s softwares.
Usually it would ask you to type 1 for yes, and 2 for no. At later stages it was [y]es/[[n]o, etc. you know the drill. |

it was 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 for your party number if you were ready but everyone just does 1 now

Yep. What everyone else has said. "Are you ready?" "1."
Although... I personally never say "1". I think it's rather stupid. I am one of those grammar nazi guys who hate/see "u", "ur", ect; I like to apply my 'wasted' 17 years of life in school with everything I do and show I haz erned mi edu-ma-cation. ~LeNa~

yeah, as said above. it pretty much used to mean if you were ready, you would hit your number in your party order.
so if you were number 3 in the party list, youd just hit 3 when ready. but now days its hard to stretch across the keyboard over a subway sandwich, so you just hit 1 |

"1" in the case of party forming means "I have set my skill bar and attributes appropriately for the upcoming mission, I have finished all business with the various NPCs here in town, I have all of the equipment needed, and I've done my homework, chores, and any other RL duties that may pull me away from the mission/quest/whatever."

Btw. I always thought Guild Wars has a special way of saying rdy, because i rarely see "1" in other mmos. Last edited by ele pl; Oct 19, 2009 at 10:37 PM // 22:37.. |

The meaning and origin is exactly as you guessed, OP.
I personally never use it, except at the end of my part of the MQSC run. Every other time, I say, "Ready," or, "/ready," because I think using such unnecessary abbreviations is... unnecessary. |

1 means rdy, the only conclusion I can come up with is hideous laziness that led to a single key press rather that type "Ready!" or "Rdy" (caps lock optional ) but seems to have caught on nevertheless

I find it very lazy that people say 1, I usually say "one".

I've used '1' without really considering the history. I had always considered that in computer programming, 1 is true and 0 is false, so never had an issue answering '1' for ready. Pretty sure I will continue to use 1, if only to aggravate everyone who thinks it's lazy.
